Echoes of the Past

It was a low growl that came from deep within the city. Jackson knew he had to be careful, so he drew his weapon and continued. Suddenly, he saw movement again. This time, he was sure that he had seen something. He moved towards the movement, and as he turned a corner, he saw a creature he had never seen before. It was large and muscular, with razor-sharp teeth and claws. Jackson knew he was in danger, but he also knew he had to stay calm. He slowly backed away from the creature, keeping his eyes locked on it. Suddenly, the creature lunged forward, and Jackson fired his weapon. The shot hit the creature but didn't seem to have any effect. It continued to move towards Jackson, growling and snarling. Jackson fired again, but the creature didn't stop. He realized that he was outmatched and outgunned. Just as the creature was about to pounce on him, Jackson saw movement out of his eye. He turned and saw a group of creatures he recognized from his previous visit to the city. They were moving toward him, and they didn't look happy. The creatures surrounded Jackson, and he was sure that he was about to meet his end. But then, something strange happened. The creatures started communicating with each other, and Jackson realized they were trying to tell him something. Suddenly, he understood. The creature he had just shot was not attacking him out of aggression. It was trying to protect the city and the creatures that lived there. The city was not empty. It was inhabited by an intelligent species that had evolved to live harmoniously with its environment. Jackson realized that he had misunderstood the city and its inhabitants. He had come in as an outsider, assuming that he knew everything. But in reality, he had been the ignorant one. As he returned to his spacecraft, Jackson couldn't help but feel a sense of shame. He had gone to the city looking for answers, but instead, he had created more questions.
