On a distant planet, there was a city unlike any other. The city was made of towering steel blue structures that reached into the sky. But there was something eerie about this city, something unsettling. Despite its size, the city was empty. There were no sounds of bustling crowds, no cars honking, and no footsteps echoing through the streets. The city was a mystery to all who had heard of it, and it was even rumored to be cursed. However, one brave adventurer, Jackson, decided to investigate the city and uncover its secrets. Jackson was a seasoned explorer and had always been fascinated by the unknown. As Jackson entered the city, he felt a strange sense of calm. The plants and trees surrounding the city were lush and green, and there was a peacefulness to the air that he had never experienced before. The buildings were imposing, but they seemed to have an almost human-like quality to them. As he explored further, Jackson discovered something remarkable. The city was not abandoned after all. It was teeming with life but not the kind of life he had expected. There were creatures of all shapes and sizes, some that he had never seen before. They roamed the streets and filled the buildings, living in harmony with the environment. Jackson realized that this city was not cursed, but instead, it was a city that had been abandoned by humans long ago. The planet's ecology had balanced itself, and the creatures had evolved to live in the city. As he continued to explore, Jackson found something that he never expected to find. In the center of the city was a structure that looked like it had been untouched for thousands of years. The structure was covered in symbols and hieroglyphs that he could not decipher. However, as he looked closer, he realized the symbols looked familiar. They were symbols of an ancient civilization that had long been extinct. As he looked closer, Jackson realized the structure was a time capsule. The ancient civilization had left behind a message for future generations, and Jackson was the first human to find it. The message contained the secrets of the city and the planet it was on, including a cure for a deadly virus spreading across the galaxy. Jackson knew that he had to share the message with the rest of the galaxy, and he left the city with a newfound respect for the balance of ecology and the power of ancient civilizations. And so, the city remained a mystery to all who had heard of it, but for Jackson, it was a reminder of the past, a hope for the future, and a message to humanity that there is always something to learn from the echoes of the past. Jackson returned to his spacecraft, still in awe of what he had discovered. As he set a course to return to civilization, he couldn't help but reflect on the beauty of the city he had just left behind. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months as he returned to civilization. But during his journey, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being followed. He had a distinct impression that someone or something was watching him, but he couldn't see anything. Finally, he arrived back at civilization and shared his discovery with the rest of the galaxy. The cure for the deadly virus saved countless lives, and the message left by the ancient civilization sparked a new era of research and exploration. But Jackson couldn't shake the feeling that he had left something behind in the city. He knew he had to return and investigate the strange feeling of being followed. So, he set a course back to the planet and landed on the surface. As he walked towards the city, he saw that something had changed. The creatures that had once lived in harmony with the city were now agitated and restless. Jackson felt the same sense of unease that he had felt before. As he walked through the empty city, he felt the eyes of the creatures on him. Suddenly, he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He turned quickly, but there was nothing there. He was sure he had seen something but couldn't be certain. As he walked deeper into the city, the unease grew stronger. And then, he heard a sound. It was a low growl that came from deep within the city. Jackson knew he had to be careful, so he drew his weapon and continued. Suddenly, he saw movement again. This time, he was sure that he had seen something. He moved towards the movement, and as he turned a corner, he saw a creature he had never seen before. It was large and muscular, with razor-sharp teeth and claws. Jackson knew he was in danger, but he also knew he had to stay calm. He slowly backed away from the creature, keeping his eyes locked on it. Suddenly, the creature lunged forward, and Jackson fired his weapon. The shot hit the creature but didn't seem to have any effect. It continued to move towards Jackson, growling and snarling. Jackson fired again, but the creature didn't stop. He realized that he was outmatched and outgunned. Just as the creature was about to pounce on him, Jackson saw movement out of his eye. He turned and saw a group of creatures he recognized from his previous visit to the city. They were moving toward him, and they didn't look happy. The creatures surrounded Jackson, and he was sure that he was about to meet his end. But then, something strange happened. The creatures started communicating with each other, and Jackson realized they were trying to tell him something. Suddenly, he understood. The creature he had just shot was not attacking him out of aggression. It was trying to protect the city and the creatures that lived there. The city was not empty. It was inhabited by an intelligent species that had evolved to live harmoniously with its environment. Jackson realized that he had misunderstood the city and its inhabitants. He had come in as an outsider, assuming that he knew everything. But in reality, he had been the ignorant one. As he returned to his spacecraft, Jackson couldn't help but feel a sense of shame. He had gone to the city looking for answers, but instead, he had created more questions. He realized that the city and its inhabitants were not a mystery to be solved, but rather a source of knowledge and wonder that needed to be respected. From that day on, Jackson devoted himself to studying the creatures and the city. He became an advocate for their protection, and he worked tirelessly to promote understanding and respect between the different species of the galaxy. Years passed, and Jackson grew old, but he never forgot the lessons he had learned on that alien planet. He continued to study and explore, always with an open mind and a sense of wonder. As he lay on his deathbed, surrounded by his family and friends, he knew his time was ending. But he was at peace. As he closed his eyes for the final time, Jackson felt a sense of gratitude. He had lived a life of adventure and discovery and made a difference. And as he took his final breath, he knew he had left a legacy. - Milky Way Digest [MWD} vol 30 pg. 62 -
